The Telegraph Boy

Horatio Alger Jr. (Jan. 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was an American author known for his young adult novels about poor boys who rise from humble beginnings to achieve middle-class comfort and security through good deeds and hard work. His stories, which became popular during the Gilded Age, are famous for their "rags-to-riches" themes that have had a significant impact on American culture. In Alger's books, the main character is usually a teenage boy who improves his situation by being honest, hardworking, and kind. While there is a popular "Horatio Alger myth" suggesting these boys became wealthy solely through hard work, it is more accurate to say that their good character often led to opportunities. For instance, a boy might return a lost sum of money or rescue someone from an accident, and these actions would lead to his success. This narrative highlights how integrity and perseverance can lead to success, a message that still resonates today.
